How to Plant Hyacinthoides Hispanica?

Hyacinthoides hispanica, also known as Spanish bluebells or wood hyacinth, is a bulbous perennial. The Hyacinthoides hispanica is a native plant to Spain, Portugal and northwest Africa. This plant doesn’t care if the area is sunny or shady, and if the flowers are left on the plant, they will multiply and fill in the area. You can enjoy these bell-shaped flowers around the second week of May and they come in white, pink and bluish lavender.

• Garden fork or tiller
• Well-rotted compost
• Rake
• Trowel
• Organic mulch

1. Prepare the ground in the fall. Amend the soil with a generous supply of well-rotted compost. Work the compost into the soil. Remove sticks, rocks and other debris from the soil and then rake the soil level.
2. Dig holes 5 inches deep, every 4 inches.
3. Examine the Hyacinthoides hispanica bulb to differentiate between the top and bottom. Inspect each end to find where the scales are folded around each other; this is the top side and should face up.
4. Insert one Hyacinthoides hispanica bulb in each hole with the top facing upwards in the hole. If you plant the bulb in the wrong direction, the plant will straighten out and grow in the right direction.
5. Pour water into the hole and then fill in the hole with soil.
6. Cover the bulbs with a 4-inch layer of organic mulch to insulate the bulbs through the winter. When spring arrives, the Hyacinthoides hispanica will grow and flower.
