What Planting Soil is Best for Salvias?

Salvia, known for flowering throughout the season and for doing well in hot and dry conditions, is a colorful bedding plant. Although there is a wide variety of salvia cultivars, all benefit from proper soil conditions.

Drainage

• Whether it is planted in the ground or in containers, salvia performs best in a well-drained soil. If the soil is too wet or too dry, the plants will not produce flowers. Water-logged soil may cause the roots to rot. A 2-inch layer of compost or peat moss will help ensure adequate drainage.

Soil pH

• The pH of the planting soil is important for good germination and growth of the saliva. Soil pH should be between 5.5 and 6.0. Some salvia cultivars are extremely sensitive to alkaline soils.

Other Considerations

• Saliva is sensitive to soils that have been treated with methyl bromide and those with too high salt content. When planting salvia, soil should be sterile and generally free of pathogens.
