Fall

7 Fall colors might be associated with great trees in giant landscape parks, but there is no reason at all why they cannot be locked up in relatively small containers to bring color to a small garden when the last flush of summer flowers are fading. For beautiful foliage, Japanese acers are the best subjects, not being too tall, generally reaching 5 ft (1.5 m) in pots. The leaves of the beautiful wild rose R.virginiana, turn an incredible beetroot-red when the cold comes, ending up yellow-orange. As for shrubs, Cotoneaster horizontalis is covered with red berries, while Callicarpa bodinieri “Profusion” has berries that are shiny and lilac that will bring a dose of cheer into the garden. Chrysanthemums and asters provide a colorful spectrum of late flowers.

GLORIOUS COLOR

LEFT: Add a rich dimension to the fall garden using colorful foliage and late-flowering perennials. This vibrant acer makes a wonderfully bright contribution to the fall landscape, and proves that pots have as much of a place in the garden late in the year as they do in the earlier months.
