FATHER and daughter, Ivan and Louise Robinson from Ballgowan, Co Down have won Highest EBI and Best Protein Awards at the prestigious Baileys Irish Champion Cow Competition which was held last weekend at the 70th Virginia Show in Co. Cavan. Their cow Glaslough Charles Fancy registered 1522 kgs of fat & protein (3.53 % protein content).
Eugene and Sean Murphy from Waterfall in Co. Cork won the overall ‘Baileys® Irish Champion’ title with Dalevalle OT1 J Lulu, a six year old cow that beat 24 other bovine beauties from across the four provinces.
Commenting on his final decision, competition judge, Iwan Morgan, from Wales said: “It has been an ambition of mine to follow in my father’s footsteps and judge this competition. All of the cows here today were remarkable but the sheer power and capacity of the winner, in particular that incredible udder, gave her the edge.” The Murphys adds the Baileys Champion Cow title to their recent success at the Cork Show with the same cow.
Hallow Lheros Indian Ink owned by Mervyn and Philip Jones from Gorey, Co Wexford was declared ‘Reserve Champion’. Honourable Mention went to Co Wicklow farmer, John Hurley for his cow, Clonpaddin Goldwyn Fanta. Other prizes were awarded in specialist categories including Richard Jones from Co Wexford and Roy Crombie of Co Donegal for their jointly owned ‘Best Dry Cow’ winner, Ardnasalem Kite Lulu 2; Co Dublin farmers Mervyn Eager and Cyril Dowling took ‘Best Heifer-in-Milk’ with their cow, Baldonnel Goldwyn Star.
Speaking at the event, the Irish Minister of State for Agriculture, Shane McEntee TD, said: “This is a much anticipated event among pedigree breeders and its success can be attributed to the fact that it rewards animals with good commercial milk production, outstanding appearance and show ring characteristics.”
