Dendrobium is a genus of orchids that contains more than a thousand species. Dendrobium orchids have a reputation of being easier to take care of than other types of orchids.

Identification

  • Although different species of Dendrobium exist, many of them have longer stems than other orchids. They produce flowers of several colors, including purple and white. Some species of Dendrobium produce multi-colored flowers.

Types

  • According to American Orchid Society, Dendrobium are broken into two groups based on where they grow. One group prefers a winter dormancy period, while the other needs nighttime temperature of more than 55 degrees F.

Time Frame

  • Dendrobium typically grow blooms when the weather is cool, like the late fall, during the winter or in the early spring. Once they bloom, the flowers last from three weeks to a month.
