How to Grow Crocosmia Lucifer

Derived from Greek, krokos, meaning saffron and osme meaning smell, Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’ is a highly desired plant in many gardens. Apart from its attractive looks, its leaves resist insects and its flowers attract hummingbirds. The ‘Lucifer’ flowers are bright red and have a shape similar to day lilies. They grow at the top of thin stalks that are perfect for cutting. The leaves of ‘Lucifer’ are broad, and sword shaped and are attractive on their own when the plant is not in bloom.

• Garden trowel
• Fertilizer

• Crocosmia Lucifer bulbs

1. Choose a spot to plant your bulbs in. The soil should be dry. The plant likes a lot of sun, so choose an area that gets direct sunlight for several hours per day.
2. Plant the flower in early spring; it will bud in mid to late summer. Fertilize the bed you are putting the plant in with general fertilizer or manure. Dig one hole for each bulb 4 inches deep in the soil and approximately 2 inches in diameter.
3. Make each hole 1 to 2 feet apart. Place bulbs in their holes and cover with soil. Pat down firmly.
4. Water the plant twice per week for five minutes at a time.

Tips & Warnings

• In winter, cover the bed with mulch to prevent the flowers from dying in freezing weather. This is a perennial plant.
