How to Cut Back a Jasmine Plant

images (5)

Jasmine plants grow very vigorously and can take over other plants and parts of your garden very quickly. Jasmine plants may offer an alluring flower, but to get the desired look you want, it is important to understand how to cut back the plant. Jasmine plants can be trained to grow long and tall, or more like a bush if you prefer.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • Pruning shears
  1. Wait until the late spring when the flowers have died off to do regular pruning and promote growth. Do maintenance pruning any time that is necessary to remove damaged or dead parts of the plant.

  2. Get sharp pruning shears to make clean cuts on your plant. Don’t just rip or tear parts of the plant by hand. Cut the tips off of each stem. When you make cuts, cut at an angle to prevent water from collecting on the stem surface.

  3. Cut off weak or damaged limbs. When cutting damaged parts, cut until you get to a healthy part.

  4. Cut off any part of the plant that is growing off too far in one direction, or is going too high. Cut back to a lateral shoot or a bud. Stems that are overcrowding should be cut at the base and removed.

  5. Run your hand along the plant and remove any dead flowers that are remaining. The flowers should practically fall right off.

  6. Start hard pruning if necessary. If your plant has become too big and you want to start over, you can do so. Wait until the dormancy period in the late fall. Cut back every stem to approximately 2 feet off the ground. The jasmine will grow strong after hard pruning but it will take several years to bloom again.
