How to Keep a Phlox From Wilting

keep-phlox-wilting-200X200

Phlox is an attractive perennial that blooms each year faithfully. Keeping the phlox from wilting is achieved by giving it the proper care and growing conditions. Phlox varieties range in height from 1.5 to 5 feet. They are available in colors of white, pink, blue, red, lavender and orange. Some varieties have light or dark centers. Phlox blooms for about a month during early summer.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Instructions

  1. Plant your phlox in an area with full sun and well-drained soil. Space them generously in your flower beds to ensure adequate ventilation.

  2. Divide your phlox plants frequently to provide them with air circulation. Avoid overcrowding the plants in your flower beds. Powdery mildew results in humid conditions without the proper air flow and can cause wilting.

  3. Treat your phlox with a fungicide at the first sight of powdery mildew. If the treatment is administered early, you can prevent the flowers from wilting and looking unsightly in your flower beds.

  4. Water your phlox plants well during the dry, summer months. Use mulch to conserve the moisture in the soil.

Tips & Warnings

  • Choose phlox varieties that are resistant to powdery mildew, such as Katherine, Laura, Robert Poore, and Bright Eyes.

  • Remove faded flowers from your phlox plants. This helps to prolong the blooming period.
