Bonsai Pottery

images (5) The word bonsai is at times interpreted as “plant in a pot”, hence the importance of bonsai pottery in the whole scheme of things cannot be overemphasized, and over the ages it has grown into a matured art form in itself.

Bonsai pots could either be hand made or machine made. These are designed not only to behold the bonsai plant but also to add to the aesthetic beauty of the place it is located in.

Apart from the fact that bonsai pots could either be hand made or machine made, another classification parameter could be the method of firing the pots and the temperature to which the pots are fired.

It is essential to ensure that the bonsai pot is resistant to the cycles of heat and cold. During its life time the pot would be exposed to many such cycles and if it is not prepared properly then it is vulnerable to crack under such conditions.

Usually bonsai pots are made of stoneware which is fired to high temperatures, and thus become resistant to the cycles of heat and cold.

Generally the stoneware pots are not glazed, as this would hinder the ability of the pot to have proper aeration. Even if the outside surface is glazed the inside should not be. It is also advisable to ensure that the bonsai pots you choose should have a base to stand upon.

Pottery for bonsai could also be made from porcelain, which is baked to even higher temperatures than stoneware.

Porcelain pots generally give a very polished finish and are used mainly for a flowering plant or a fruit bearing bonsai plant. The use of porcelain pots ensures that the ornamental appeal of the bonsai plant is accentuated by the rich beauty of bonsai pottery.

Usually enthusiasts prefer to go for hand made pots rather than the machine made pots. The most important advantage with hand made pots is the fact that you can have them made in a size and shape of your choice. This is not possible in case of machine made pots as they come in standard designs, shapes and sizes.

One important aspect to be kept in mind, while deciding on your bonsai pottery, is that the pot should have proper drainage holes.

This would ensure that excess water is drained out of the plant which otherwise would result in rotting of the roots and eventually will lead to bad health of the plant.

And further more the pot should not be too shallow. This would result in a situation where in the roots of the plant would be exposed out of the soil and would become vulnerable to the elements of nature.

The type of clay used in the making the bonsai pots is also very important as it affects the growth of the bonsai plant.

There are varieties of shapes you could choose for your pot. The pots could either be round, oval, rectangular in shape. They also come in different textures and glaze.

Depending on the shape, size and the texture of the bonsai pottery it could cost you anywhere between 15$ to 400$. So go ahead and choose the best bonsai pottery that you could afford, so as to enhance the beauty of your bonsai plants.
