1) Choose the juniper tree species you want to grow as a miniature tree. Make sure that you know the variety you have chosen to cultivate because there are some differences on how you should grow each juniper tree species.
2) Use a soil that has the capacity to drain out excess amounts of water. Congestion of water into the bonsai container will cause rotting of the fine hair roots in your juniper bonsai tree.
3) Choose a bonsai container that has drainage holes at its base. The drainage holes will help prevent stocking of the water inside the bonsai pot.
4) Juniper bonsai trees love bright sunlight. You can expose your miniature tree under a bright sunlight up to four hours. You can expose them to direct morning sunlight and an indirect afternoon sunlight by placing it under a shady area. If you allow the juniper bonsai tree to get direct afternoon sunlight, it can cause burning of its leaves and will further cause weakness to your bonsai tree.
5) Give sufficient amounts of water when the soil gets dry. You can check whether the soil is dry or not by sticking your finger into the soil at least half an inch. If the soil feels dry, you can give water using a fine nozzle water container until the water spills out from the drainage holes of the pot. The water container that has fine nozzle will help prevent washing out of the soil from the bonsai container.
6) Feed your juniper bonsai tree with a mild organic fertilizer. You must use a fertilizer that contains equal amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Then, it should be applied during the season of spring to provide essential nutrients as the juniper bonsai tree grows at a fast rate. When autumn season comes, you should use a fertilizer that has less nitrogen. But during winter season and when your juniper bonsai gets weak for some reasons, you must never give fertilizer. This is because during winter season, juniper bonsai tree becomes dormant and feeding them is unnecessary.
7) Another thing you should not miss is repotting your juniper bonsai tree. When your bonsai is still young, you can perform repotting every year. As your juniper bonsai tree ages and matures, you should repot it once in every two to four years. You just have to check its roots to determine if it needs to be transferred to a bigger pot.
