Every garden needs great clusters of evergreens, plants that will keep performing all year, summer and winter, in frost, drought, and snow.
When gardeners speak of color, they rarely mean green, but green is an excellent color with a variety of hues from bright green, olive green, blue-green to dark green. This constant show helps provide the garden with backbone, a permanent structure that divides the garden, creating areas where you can place the colors
When it comes to individual eye-catchers, the choice is huge. Choisya ternata forms a glossy mound with spring-scented flowers. Euphobia rigida makes a marvellous array of brown stems, with fleshy green leaves topped by yellow in early summer. Euonymus fortunei “Silver Queen†makes a bright variegated shrub. Conifers provide all kinds of shapes with verticals, ovals, horizontals, and even tall, thin spires. Garrya elliptica “James Roofâ€, with its midwinter catkins, provides the best winter displays
ABOVE: The best, all purpose box for topiary is Buxus sempervirens. It can be pruned into cones, spirals, balls, large globes, and standards.
THE IVY LEAGUE
LEFT: Ivies are woefully underrated. They easily reach those parts other plants cannot get to, covering any bare gaps on walls. They can be pruned and shaped at will from spring to fall.
STAGGERING HEIGHTS
FAR LEFT: A well staged show with a build-up in height using clipped box and conifer, offset by white marguerites.
FRAMED BY BOX
RIGHT: The area is defined by evergreens, within which are the feature plants. These include a fruiting citrus with cacti to add an extra layer of interest.
