Optimism grows for mulesing clip alternative

Despite healthy scepticism from various fields, those finding a mulesing alternative by 2010 are growing in confidence that mulesing clip technology can deliver. As seen on www.farmonline.com.au From agricultural news, weather, classifieds and market reports to properties for sale, job vacancies and rural events, farmonline has it covered.

  1. Fly strike is horrible, I realise that. Mulesing is as horrible. More animals are mutilated by mulesing than flystrike. The only reason flystrike is such a problem is that there are more sheep than a farmer can maintain. Farmers would lose money hiring people to ensure the proper inspection of the flock. They resort to such measures not for the welfare of the sheep but to insure they loose less money culling (or in rare cases treating) the injured.

  3. RAILING against the march of synthetic jumpers and carpets, Prince Charles is attempting to rebrand wool as a fashionable and eco-friendly fabric that consumers will choose for clothes and home furnishings.

The scheme, launched this week, aims to help sheep farmers by boosting the price of wool worldwide.

  4. There was once a boy who use to go to the shore every morning when the tide drew out and throw as many starfish into the sea as he could before the sun reached it’s peak. One morning, an observing girl asked, “Boy, why do you do this? There are thousands of starfish on this shore and they are all going to die? Why even bother to throw them into the sea?”

Picking up a starfish and tossing it into the sea the boy replied, “It made a difference for that one.”

  6. well i new you didnt live in n.z or oz as most of your coments are woefully inacurate its easy 2 come up with ideas or look at some1 elses practices and think you have a better soulition but untill youv actually see first hand how and y things r done in this maner you should keep your coments to your self as a lot of this CRAP people read here actually beleave it. p.s iv shore in norway as well…..in the slughter house!

  7. yes it starts on ther tails then spreads round ther back legs sometimes round ther bellys as well. iv shorn sheep all over the u.k 4 a number of years and 99 percent of the time the sheep never ever get crutched they basicaly have 12 months worth of shit attched 2 them the only consalation is that it gets so heavy the shit actually pulls the wool off from around the crutch and bits of the tail.most of the time its not a stomach problem its rich grass at spring time and haveing long tails.

  8. Shit on their tails?
When out sheep have that then they usually just have a stomach problem. When they have, we give them a vaccine.

  9. how it,s exensive il explain 4 a start let,s say you have 10,000 sheep now at 80cents each pluss 23 dollars hr for woolhandlers pluss 180 dollars a day to feed a crew of 6 lets say it takes 8 days hrs=$4416 meals=$1440 crutching=$8000 total=$13,856 dollars thats not including gst or acc thats twice a year looser.

  11. your going to be a farmer in oz or n.z? if your in the u.k ya dont count as the only thing they farm over ther is birds and butterflys and shit lots and lots of shit as they dont even dock ther tails…

  12. -Continued. Finally, although I generally support PETA in their anti-animal cruelty crusade, I agree that they’re not perfect and tend not to follow through with things.
At any rate, its always nice to be able to end these little Internet disagreements in a certain degree of concurrence. 🙂

  13. I didn’t realise that her ad had created hate for Australia — I have a very positive view of Australia; my Aunt (in law, not by blood) is Australian, and I think it’s a fantastic country. I am against the idea of Mulesing, and would like to see an alternative, but apart from that, I have no problem with Australia. Continued-

  14. -Continued. One PETA spokesperson basically said they were blackmailing. Pinks ad created alot of hate for Australia in the world, yet to her credit, Pink did what PETA wouldn’t. Once she realised what a huge impact that ad had. She actually met with farmers and the wool industry. She actually did her own research. It was then she said she “had been misled by PETA”. For that i have much respect for Pink. It’s just sad all these years on one ad is still all most people know about the situation.

  15. Tebesile. I think we have reached an understanding and you seem like a reasonable person.

I guess i got a bit hot under the collar with you because PETAs campaign did alot of damage to the Australian wool industry. Yet rather than working with industry to improve sheep welfare they basically refused to meet with anyone. They spent their time trying to pressure large stores to boycott Australian wool using sometimes inaccurate information. Continued-

  16. Oh, PLEASE let’s not get started on the “animals can’t feel pain” thing. The question is not to whether they feel physical pain (because its pretty obvious that they do; even scientists accept this), but whether they feel “emotional pain” which I think youll agree isnt really the issue here.

  17. I agree with you over your point about life saving surgery, and I understand what you’re saying. I understand that farming is a hard job, and that this is a tricky subject, and that there is no easy solution — but I do feel that this is a very cruel method, and that more attention should be paid to the alternatives. That’s all I was saying.

And yes, I quoted Pink — because she was my source. I admit I could have paraphrased it, but I didn’t. That doesn’t mean I can’t form my own opinions.
