12 When winter sets in, and nothing is happening outside, consider garden room or conservatory. Here, you can keep a far wider range of plants than you thought possible, with everything from tender citrus plants, such as Citrus x meyeri ‘Meyer’ which likes humid conditions and gives you a year-round supply of fresh lemons, to Jasminum polyanthum. Tender pelargoniums enjoy the comfort and shelter and with reward you with blooms. A huge variety can be grown in different pots. You will need to provide bright sun, heating, insulation, some humidity, and shading or the plants with roast in high summer, and plenty of ventilation, even in winter, to prevent to build-up of pets and diseases, and to eliminate stagnant air.

When choosing plants for a garden room always visit a specialist nursery where the range of plants is often impressive. Take care when choosing climbers such as grapes because they can quickly take over, turning the room into a leafy jungle.
