AgriLife Extension to offer landowner stewardship series

Series offered Aug. 8-Sept. 20 in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO – The Texas AgriLife Extension Service will present a series of unique informational meetings to help landowners understand general concepts related to rural living, said the AgriLife Extension agent for natural resources in Bexar County.


Each session of the six-part Alamo Area Landowner Stewardship Series program will take place from 6-8:30 p.m. on dates beginning Aug. 9 and ending Sept. 20.

“Participants in this program series will be introduced to topics ranging from raising livestock and horses to plant identification, fence building, proper pesticide applications, soil and water testing, stock-pond design and operational planning,” said Bryan Davis.


Davis said the landowner program series also will provide an opportunity for new residents of Bexar County to network and assess what type of agricultural enterprise might be best for their property.


Program dates, titles, descriptions and continuing education units available follow:

– Aug. 9, Ag Business 101: Economic planning and resource inventory for landowners.

– Aug. 16, Farm Equipment and Fencing: Proper fence construction for livestock and wildlife; proper type and size of farm and ranch equipment. Two general continuing education units.

– Aug. 23, Water Management: Well testing; rainwater harvesting for livestock and wildlife; pond construction and management. Two general continuing education units.

– Aug. 30, Wildlife Management: Wildlife evaluation and plan development; wildlife tax valuation benefits; managing wildlife and predators. Two general continuing education units.

– Sept. 13, Livestock Management: Basic livestock health, nutrition; land requirements for horses, other livestock.

– Sept. 20, Range and Brush Management: Reading the landscape, conducting a rangeland inventory; brush management and the Brush Buster’s program. Two general continuing education units.


Series program presentations on Aug. 9, 16 and 23 will take place in the International Room on the San Antonio Livestock Exposition grounds, 3201 E. Houston St. Signs will be posted.


Program presentations on Aug. 30, Sept. 13 and Sept. 20 will take place in Suite 208 of the AgriLife Extension office for Bexar County, 3355 Cherry Ridge Dr. in northwest San Antonio.


A light evening meal will be served during each program.
