About Phuoc an Coffee Company

Phuoc an Coffee Company was established in 1976. The location of company was initially the area selected by French for coffee plantation at the end of 19th century. Then it was called CADA coffee farm. Presently Phuoc An still preserves some vestiges of the original CADA farm and some processing equipment used during 1950s.

Coffee areas are situated mainly in Krongpak and Krongbuk districts in the Daklak province. The plantations are located on the large plateau at more than 1500 m over the sea level. The place is very good for robusta coffee because of the typical Bazan soil and favorable climate.

Phuoc An Coffee Company is a state-owned enterprises belonging to Daklak province authority. However, the land is under the "ownership" (in Vietnamese the "land use right") of the Phuoc An Coffee Company. The coffee plantations are divided into lots with area up to few hectares each and are allocated to worker families under a long-term use contractual agreement. Phuoc An Coffee Company provides technical services like seedling selection, farming techniques, quality control, providing production materials and possibly credit support to workers paid back by coffee beans.

There are two modern wet processing chains allowing Phuoc An to produce very high quality coffee. Due to its good reputation, presently the demand of high quality coffee from Phuoc An is higher than its capacity.

About Phuoc an Coffee Company and Utz Certified

Phuoc An is among the UTZ CERTIFIED producers having the highest production level. Also in Vietnam, Phuoc An is one of the biggest UTZ suppliers.
In the last years, the food and especially the coffee markets are demanding more and more quality and at the same assurance that the international food safety standards are met. The production should be furthermore as much as possible natural, environmental friendly and with care for the growing communities. Only in this way the sustainability in coffee production and trading can be facilitated. This is the reason why Phuoc An has been pioneering in ‘clean’ production initiatives and by achieving certification. Since 2003 Phuoc An has the UTZ certificate. Presently, it is registering to work also with 4C.

The UTZ certification offers a lot of opportunities for Phuoc An.
– It enables the company to prove its responsibility in coffee production and businesses.
– It helps Phuoc An to ensure stable quality and coffee traceability.
– It gives great chance to company to stabilize the production, to facilitate market access and to expand the markets.
– The UTZ certification adds value to Phuoc An’s coffee while improving the production efficiency.
– Since the start of the certification program, Phuoc An has taken good care and has showed responsibility to its workers and related communities. Environmental conditions have been improved and natural resources preserved.

Impact on our farm

Annually, Phuoc An has recurrent activities to improve and renew coffee processing technologies to ensure stable and quality production. Technical services and farming measures are key priorities in the company’s policy for assistance to the workers and their production.
We have conducted projects to improve the waste treatment in the coffee processing to mitigate bad impact on environment.

We have also spent significant budgets on school building and health care for workers that consists regular health check. It also organizes annual holiday trips for the employees.
UTZ certification enables us to improve our business and production management. Through good implementation of UTZ program at Phuoc An, we have received strong support and attention of authorities as a good model for suitable coffee production.

Ambitions for the future

Phuoc An has a policy to expand the UTZ program to other coffee areas where the company may source beans for its processing chains. We aim to increase UTZ coffee production from 4000 tons in 2008 to 8000 tons by 2010. The biggest challenge will be to ensure the high qualified management in accordance to the UTZ code, high investment for regular expenses as well as investment for improving processing and environmental protection.
