Oilseed rape margins to exceed wheat

download (12) THE oilseed rape gross margin is budgeted to be greater than that of wheat for the 2012 harvest.

This is one of the most revealing changes to the economics of farming identified in the newly published John Nix Farm Management Pocketbook.

It will be the first time in 20 years OSR is shown to clearly outstrip wheat as the highest broad-acre combinable crop. Several other combinable crop gross margins are budgeted even higher subject to contract availability.

As far as the livestock sector is concerned, beef and sheep gross margins are shown to be offering greater opportunities for profitability than for many years.

This is in contrast to the most intensively farmed caged egg layers which are budgeted to leave a negative gross margin per bird. This is even before overheads are accounted for reflecting the extremely difficult egg market which is prevailing.

The 42nd edition of the John Nix Farm Management Pocketbook has been fully updated taking account of the changes to the economics of UK farming over the last year.
