NEW DELHI: An Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) on food will be meeting on August 12 for taking decision on allowing more sugar exports and also lifting restriction on wheat exports. The EGoM is headed by Union Finance Minister Mr Pranab Mukherjee.
So far this year, Centre has permitted exports of 1-million tonnes of sugar in two equal tranches under the Open General Licence (OGL). In the meeting, sugar and wheat exports will be discussed.
Moreover, the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) has been requesting Centre to allow another 1-million tonnes of sugar exports as India has witnessed strong surplus stock and also robust international prices.
Even, many political parties from Maharashtra are of the opinion that more exports should take place so that mills are able to make payments to the sugarcane farmers. Recently, Food Minister KV Thomas had has said in the Lok Sabha that the sugar mills owe Rs 2,591 crore to the sugarcane farmers till May 15.
