SNETTERTON: Cereal growers are looking to invest in the future of a new advanced grain processing site on the A11 corridor at Snetterton.

There has already been cash backing from farmers willing to pay £5 per tonne towards the initial set-up and planning costs, said Openfield’s Rob Sanderson.

He received firm expressions for more than 20,000 tonnes of storage since the initial briefing last month.

Seventy farm businesses were represented at an initial meeting and another 30 unable to attend supported the venture, he said.

"We’ve invited them all to subscribe £5 per tonne of prospective interest to fund the planning and we’ve had a very good reception from Breckland Council." He said the support from farmers had given the projected scheme a real boost. And the new facility would be designed to have an intake of between 20,000 to 25,000 tonnes a day.

"It is not really a grain storage but it is a processing complex, which happens to be owned by farmers. It is an opportunity to take two layers of fixed costs.

"We’ve got a good model and a good team with Openfield and our stage partners. We’ve got 15 sites through the UK, storing one million tonnes, and it is rapidly expanding. It will take a couple of years but we’re heading in the right direction." Mr Sanderson, said Openfield’s operation at Bressingham, near Diss, which was reliant on 40-year-old stores, was another long-term candidate for replacement.
