ONE north-east farmer who is going against the trend and remaining in dairying is Colin Marr who with his wife, Carol, and sons, Nicholas and Gavin, farms at Cultercullen, Udny.
The Marr family has farmed at Cultercullen since 1936, when Colin’s grandfather, Alfred Marr, secured the tenancy, and Colin has been investing in new buildings and a robotic milking system which has seen the herd expand from 200 to 240 cows, with another 20 cows to be added in the coming months.
The catalyst for this investment has been membership of the Tesco Sustainable Dairy Group (TSDG) which has given the family confidence to stay in dairying and expand their business.
