AHMEDABAD: After the Dussehri mango variety grown in Uttar Pradesh, the Kesar mango variety grown around the foothills of Girnar mountains in Gujarat’s Junagadh district, has secured the global recognition as ‘Gir Kesar’ mango with the help of Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
Mr NC Patel, Junagadh Agriculture University (JAU) Vice-Chancellor, said, “GI registration will help the farmers of Junagadh and Amreli district immensely. From now onwards, no other Kesar mango variety, grown in other parts of Gujarat like Kutch, Valsad.. can be sold as ‘Gir Kesar’ mango.”
The GI registration will help the mango farmers located in 18 talukas of Junagadh and Amreli districts as the added value of GI registration to their produce will bring benefits to them.
According to the GI laws, apart from Junagadh and Amreli farmers, no other vendor from any other district is allowed to sell Kesar mango as Gir Kesar. If anyone found selling, a fine of more than Rs 50,000 could be imposed as penalty and also they could be put behind bars for 1-2 years.
