Crops in good shape, a touch slow

tải xuống (2) WASHINGTON, Aug. 1 (UPI) — The U.S. corn crop remains in good shape and a touch slower than 2010, the Department of Agriculture said Monday.

As of the week ending Sunday, 18 percent of the crop was in the dough stage, compared to 23 percent at this time a year earlier, the department said.

The dough stage defines corn with kernels that are full and thick, but still soft.

At the same time, 90 percent of the crop is listed in fair, good or excellent shape, with only 10 percent listed in very poor or poor shape in this week’s crop progress report.

Cotton, similarly, has 91 percent listed as fair, good or excellent. Cotton, however is right in line with its five-year average with 62 percent of the crop setting bolls this week.

Soybean conditions have been downgraded slightly with 89 percent of the crop listed as fair, good or excellent compared to more than 90 percent a week earlier.

Farmers report 77 percent of the soybean crop has reached the blooming stage compared to a five-year average of 81 percent for this week of the year.
