A national fisheries representative is returning to Mississippi to talk to Vietnamese shrimpers about whether sea turtles need more protection.
Shrimpers at a July 13 meeting said they’re doing all that is reasonable to save sea turtles. They also accused NOAA Fisheries Service of faking data and falsely blaming the fishermen of drowning the marine reptiles.
Shrimpers blame BP PLC for a surge in turtle deaths along the Gulf Coast since last year’s oil spill. But NOAA Fisheries Service said many turtles dissected since the spill began don’t show any oil and apparently drowned near the sea floor – possibly in shrimp trawls. Most were young Kemp’s ridley sea turtles, which frequent shallow Gulf Coast waters. – AP
