Centre may allow extra sugar exports after Sept: Prof KV Thomas

images NEW DELHI: India is expected to permit more sugar exports after September this year, said Prof KV Thomas, Food Minister. India is among the largest sugar producer and also consumer. Prof KV Thomas, said, “We are not in a hurry at all (for more sugar exports) as global prices are likely to remain steady until January.”

India is expected to have 5.9-6 million tonnes of stocks at the very start of the next sugar season, which begins on October 1. It is sufficient for meeting the strong festival season demand. Centre may allow extra sugar exports after September when the present sugar year comes to an end. The sugar year is operational from October to September.

Moreover, National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories (NFCSF), a cooperative sugar factories body, has demanded that Centre should give permission for additional 500,000 tonnes of sugar exports with the aim to bag profits from high international prices.
This sugar year, Centre has permitted 2.2-million tonnes of sugar exports.
