Thousands of chickens dead in Manitoba barn fire

Police say a fire that consumed a chicken barn in rural southern Manitoba is not considered suspicious.

It happened Friday on Highway 3 near the Town of Manitou in the Rural Municipality of Pembina. RCMP say shortly after 3 pm crews from several nearby fire departments rushed to the barn, but despite efforts to fight the blaze the building was a total loss. An estimated 12,000 chicken perished in the fire.

No one was in the barn and there were no injuries but the loss is estimated at $500,000. No word yet on a cause, the Manitoba Office of the Fire Commissioner is still investigating.
