Another budget cut for Iowa’s Department of Agriculture

Like so many state agencies around the country, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship has had to deal with some significant budget cuts in recent years.  The 2012 budget contains another 175-thousand dollar cut to the Iowa Ag Department’s general fund, along with a 134-thousand cut in funding for administration of the department’s soil conservation programs.  We visited with Iowa secretary of agriculture Bill Northey about those cuts and the recently-completed Iowa legislative session—including the controversial bill that would have made it a criminal act to conduct “undercover videotaping” on livestock farms.
