Cereals: 9 million quintals harvested in Tunisia up to July 20, the most significant crop since 2003

tải xuống (6) TUNIS (TAP) – Nine million quintals of cereals were harvested to July 20, compared with 4.7 million quintals in the same period last year, said Mrs. Amel Nafti, Director-General of Agricultural Production at the Agriculture and Environment Ministry.

The crop which has been placed this year, under high supervision as a result of fire threats, was estimated  at 20 million quintals, 50 % of which only will be harvested for a value of 550 million dinars (MTD).

It is the most significant crop recorded in the past years after those of 2003 and 2009.

Addressing journalists during the regular press meeting of the Prime Ministry’s communication cell, Mrs. Nafti specified that quantities harvested are made up of durum wheat (5.6 million quintals), soft wheat (1.5 million quintals) and barley (1.8 million quintals).

Yet, she said the crop, which remains of average quality, notably suffered from the "phenomenon of germination," which affected the quality of seeds meant for making flour.

The harvest is coming to an end with 94% of cereal fields covering 1.3 million hectares harvested.

The harvest reached its peak by the end of last June with 324,000 quintals collected in a day, compared with an average of 225,000 quintals per day.
