Managing Head Scab

tải xuống (7) Head scab in wheat can be a problem when humid, wet conditions along with moderate temperatures are present when the plant is flowering.  Kiersten Wise, plant pathologist with Purdue, says if the grain appears shriveled and has a bleached light pink color, disease is most likely present.  If farmers are aware of a disease issue before harvest Wise says farmers can prevent problems by turning up the fan speed on the combine.  This allows lightweight scabby kernels to be blown out leaving healthy grain behind.  Wise also suggest storing all wheat properly to prevent the fungus from growing.  She says if wheat is stored at low moisture it will keep any potential fungus from developing and producing more vomitoxin or DON.  Wise also suggest blending scabbed wheat with other wheat to lower the amount of DON present in the grain being fed to livestock.

DON can cause feed refusal and poor weight gain in cattle and hormonal problems along with potential uterine prolapses in swine.
