Ohio State South Centers bioenergy field day

Ohio State University South Centers researchers have been examining the potential use of giant miscanthus and hybrid willow as an alternative bioenergy producing crop.  Last year the they began a five-year trial and feasibility study of growing giant miscanthus in southern Ohio to be used in ethanol production.  Researchers say the warm-season grass from Asia is being looked at because of its high output and adaptability to soil types.  Ohio State University South Centers is offering a field day July 28th for farmers to learn more about the “power crops”.  Maurus Brown, OSU South Centers bioenergy and crop specialist says the miscanthus production isn’t intended to compete with corn and soybeans, but is to be grown on marginal ground or land enrolled in CRP.
