Through the Serbian Organic Foundation—an organization founded to promote the spread of organic agriculture in the country—outlets for selling organic products in Belgrade have expanded from only 2 one year ago, to more than 40 currently.
Organic agriculture is one of the programmes emphasized by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi to create an ideal quality of life for the people of every nation. The Foundation, established by Serbian teachers of programmes designed by Maharishi to promote health, well-being, and economic self-sufficiency, has been continually featured as one of the key leaders in organic farming in Serbia.
The Serbian Organic Foundation is also the founder of the Bio Balkan Expo—the first regional fair for organic agriculture.
In the four years since organic agriculture programmes began in Serbia, the field is felt to be in its beginning stages; however the past year especially has seen rapid progress in many areas.
Another example is the increasing number of new products being developed in all areas of organic agriculture, including vegetables, crop fields, fruits, vineyards, medicinal plants, cattle breeding, and industrial processing.
The Serbian Organic Foundation is also the only NGO (non-governmental organization) in the country that participated in the European Union project ‘Focus Back’, concerning the behaviour of consumers of organic products in the western Balkans, which was completed in June.
This spring a beautiful piece of land was acquired in southeastern Serbia for the purpose of Maharishi Vedic Organic Agriculture farming, which is intended to begin soon.
