Premature leaf-fall hit apple orchard in Kullu valley

Kullu, Jul 22 : Premature leaf-fall in apple laden trees struck the crop in entire Kullu valley, while it is more severe in apple dominated belt of Naggar block, horticulture official warned the farmers advising them to take necessary measures to avert decline in production.

Himachal Pradesh Horticulture Development Officer (HDO-plant protection) Kullu K L Katoch told UNI that disease responsible for premature leaf-fall in apple crop in the district, initially develops dark-green irregular areas on the upper surface of mature leaves, which latter turns to brown spot usually 5-10 mm in diameter. The infected leaves turn yellow and fall in midseason.
Leaf-fall is so severe that fruits were seen hanging on the defoliated branches in the district and on the terminal tips of branches large brown blotches are seen. Severe defoliation may result in failure in next season. Diseases symptoms also appear on the fruit in the form of brown spots, which later become oval, dark brown, almost black and small visible spots, the official disclosed.
Suggesting farmers to take steps, he said important factor should be noted that graft union 20 to 25 cm above soil level, collect, burn and destroy the fallen leaves in winter. The farmer should keep the orchard area clean from bushes to avoid excessive humid conditions. The colonel rootstocks like M-2, M-4, M-113 and M-114 are resistant to premature leaf fall.
Mr Katoch said the farmer should spray fungus-side of leaves with Dodin 150 gm or Diathene 100 gm in 200liter drum, which would help in curbing apple scab. The farmers should keep in mind that fruit development is important factor in raising economic condition and care of the orchards. HDO said for the infected side spray of Carbendazime 100 gm in 200 Lt drum is boon for the orchard.
Local MLA Govind Thakur himself, a horticulturist, said the state government is trying its level best to control leaf-fall the awareness camps are being conducted by the department.
Deputy Director Horticulture Kullu Arvind Gupta said apple production prominently confines to Naggar block toward Manali town where export quality royal apple being produce by more than 10,000 peasants.
Total apple production in the district is expected to be 60,000 MT in the ongoing season with 24,000 Metric Ton in Naggar block, 14000 MT in Kullu, 8000 MT in Ani and 7000 MT each in Banjar and Nirmand.
