For the first time, Vietnam exported 100,000 tonnes of sugar to China, said Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) Bui Ba Bong at a meeting in Ho Chi Minh City on July 15 to review sugarcane production in 2010-2011. The country also imported 98,000 tonnes of sugar from China, 51,000 tonnes less than the same period last year.
According to MARD, in 2010-2011 Vietnam planted more than 271,000 hectares of sugarcane, more than 80 percent of which was invested by and supplied to 39 sugar manufacturers, who produced 1.15 million tonnes of sugar, 260.400 tonnes more than 2010.
All the sugar manufacturers gained good profits thanks to a high yield of 60.5 tonnes per hectare in most sugarcane fields and the remarkable increase in sugar prices, which reached nearly VND1 million per tonne.
The MARD also asked the southern province of Tay Ninh to implement a pilot model for mechanising sugarcane cultivation and harvesting.
