Vietnam Helps Mozambique Better Grow Rice

Four Vietnamese agricultural experts recently flied to Mozambique to work for about three months to help improve rice production there.

This is part of a three-side cooperation project, which was signed last December in Hanoi between the Japan International Development Agency (JICA) in Vietnam and the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, regarding improvement of wet rice production techniques in Nante, Maganja da Costa District, Zambezia Province, Mozambique. Under the agreement, six Vietnamese experts will work in Mozambique. Apart from the first four experts, Vietnam will send two plant protection and post-harvest technology experts to Mozambique this coming October when a new rice crop begins.

Vietnamese and Japanese experts will work together to survey and choose a trial area and launch the project.

Maganja da Costa District in Zambezia Province, Mozambique, has potential for rice cultivation development due to fertile land and a wealth of water resources. However, rice productivity remains low due to low farming techniques and bad irrigation management. The government of Mozambique expected that the project would help double rice production in the region./.
