The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development Sunday has ordered relevant agencies to find the cause of an epidemic that recently wiped out shrimp on 52,000 hectares of farms in the Mekong Delta and stamp it out.
At a conference it held for the purpose in Soc Trang Province Sunday, Dr Nguyen Van Hao, head of the Research Institute of Aquaculture No. 2, said the disease which has been destroying shrimp since March was possibly liver necrosis.
But its cause was yet to be identified and needed more research, he said.
He said his institute and the Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City were researching into the cause of the disease.
They had sent samples to the US-based University of Arizona, he added.
Trinh Hoai Thanh, deputy director of the Bac Lieu Province Department of Agricultural and Rural Development, blamed its spread on irrigation systems.
Officials from the Directorate of Fisheries said farmers losing shrimp had to disinfect their ponds with chlorine and lime, and put off farming for a while.
Those who did resume farming had to be very careful with the water, they added.
Minister of Agricultural and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat ordered the Department of Animal Health to complete and issue a disease-prevention manual to farmers within 10 days and not to conceal facts about the disease from farmers.
“Farmers play a crucial role in the prevention and fight against diseases and so need to know what happens and how to defeat it,” he said.
