According to the northwestern steering committee, over the past few years, the transfer and application of science and technology in the breeding industry in the northwestern region has been increased to boost the development of the industry.
This information was released during a meeting of the northwestern steering committee on June 23 to review the work, under the chairmanship of Deputy Prime Minister Truong Vinh Trong, who is head of the steering committee.
The steering committee said that in the 2004-2010 period, provinces in the region carried out 518 scientific and technological projects in agricultural and rural economic development, including 342 projects for the farming sector, 59 for breeding projects, 39 for fisheries projects and 37 for forestry projects.
In 2010, the central level spent VND 30 billion on its agricultural promotion program for northern mountainous provinces, accounting for 28% of the national agricultural promotion program.
The productivity of common breeding products has sharply increased, with meat products in 2010 in the region increasing by 13% compared to 2009, milk products increasing by 17.6% and eggs increasing by 5.8%.
The steering committee added that the breeding industry has been expanded to include more high quality breeds of animals brought into production.
In addition, breeding production is being turned into commodities production with more and more farms having a larger scale set up, creating favourable conditions for the application of science and technologies in production and increasing the productivity, quality and competitiveness of products.
Speaking during the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Truong Vinh Trong affirmed that the raising of animals and fisheries was a great advantage of the northwestern region in its fight to boost poverty reduction.
He urged the region to take all advantages to bring the industry to become a main production sector.
He also noted that northwestern provinces should seek a good marketing system for their products.
