Cattle Producers Left Out

Up to 50 percent of pastureland in some parts of Manitoba has been damaged by excess moisture.

Jay Fox, president of the Manitoba Cattle Producers Association, says it’s been a difficult summer so far for cattle producers with pastures under water and rains creating challenges with haying.

The MCPA is expressing disappointment that cattle producers were not included in the 450 million dollar AgriRecovery moisture relief package announced last week. Grain farmers in western Canada are eligible for 30 dollars an acre for land that was unseeded or flooded after seeding.

“Certainly it’s a good announcement for the grain producers. We just want to make sure that our voices are heard,” says Fox. “We want to make sure that beef producers are not forgotten, and that the government is going to have to act.”

“What we’re hoping for is a program that can be figured out as quickly as possible.”

In the long term, Fox says Hay and Pasture Insurance and Cattle Insurance programs are needed to prevent the need for ad hoc programs in the future.
