Why Do My Daylilies Lack Color Intensity?

zzz

Faded flowers or dull foliage on an expensive hybrid daylily is disappointing, especially when common tawny and lemon lilies sparkle. Pay close attention to planting instructions, as several common mistakes and natural problems can cause a lack of color intensity.

Sun Exposure

  • Although wild daylilies grow happily in full sun, pastel hybrid flowers will pale in harsh afternoon sun. Some deep red blooms will also fade in full sun.

Heat

  • Daylilies are natives of Asian mountainous regions. Many hybrids are not suited to southern growing zones; flowers (especially dark reds) and foliage will grow pale in the hottest part of summer.

Crowding

  • If foliage and flowers grow pale, plants may be competing for soil, water and air. Divide and reset plants.

Pests

  • Although daylilies are relatively pest-resistant, aphids can cause loss of color intensity and create growths on flowers as they extract nutrients. Spider mites create yellowish speckles on flowers.

Disease

  • Heat, poorly drained soil and lack of air circulation can encourage fungi that rot crowns, causing streaked, pale leaves and dull flower color.

Fertilization

  • Too much nitrogen fertilizer will contribute to daylily rust and crown rot, causing poor flowering and color. Daylilies are undemanding; fertilize them only after blooming with slow-release nitrogen fertilizer.
