How to Produce Double Petal Daylilies

z

Daylilies bloom in a range of patterns. Many hybriders enjoy experimenting with the double petal daylily. Double petal daylilies, or double daylilies, appear fuller and more layered than their single daylily counterpart. Regular daylilies normally have three petals, three sepals and six stamens. The majority of double petal daylilies are produced from extra long tissue forming on the stamens, resulting in a petaloid. The petaloids look like additional petals. Double daylilies with true extra petals are very rare. Purchase double petal daylilies at your local nursery, when available. Or, if you already have single petal daylilies that have created double petals at random (which is how they originate), you can produce double petal daylilies on your own.

Instructions

Things You’ll Need
  • 2 daylily plants with extra tissue on the stamens
  • Tweezers
    1. Remove the stamen from one plant (Pollen Parent) using tweezers or your fingers. Apply the pollen from the stamen to the pistil of the plant to be pollinated (Pod Parent) by gently brushing it on with your fingers.

If successfully pollinated, the daylily will drop off in a few days, and a small green seedpod will develop at the base of where the lily once was. The seedpod will turn brown once it has fully matured in approximately six to eight weeks.

    2. Monitor the seedpods as they near maturity. The pods will turn brown and will crack open when they are ready, displaying black, glossy seeds. Wrap fine mesh over the pod to avoid losing your seeds, if necessary.
    3. Plant your seeds in the spring in an area that receives six to eight hours of sunlight everyday. Space them at least 18 to 24 inches apart.

Tips & Warnings

  • Daylilies do well with deep watering rather than frequent, light watering. Water them only once the soil has become dry.

  • Experiment with colors and different forms using the same methods with any variety of daylily.

  • Pollinating is usually only successful about half of the time and is dependent on nature, not only your techniques.
