Top Diploid Daylilies

4

  • Daylilies are perennial plants with short-lived blooms. The blooms, however, are prolific. As one bloom fades, another appears, making the plants visually enjoyable for lengthy periods. Unlike tetraploid daylilies, which were developed by scientists, diploid daylilies have 22 chromosomes rather than 44 chromosomes. Although tetraploids yield brighter flowers, hardier foliage and are generally considered more vibrant, diploid daylilies are easier to breed and provide a garden with a softer, more refined appearance.

‘Skinwalker’

  • Winner of the 2009 Stout Silver Medal from the American Hemerocallis Society, the spider daylily ‘Skinwalker’ exhibits a tapered shape and creamy appearance. Spider daylilies’ thin-petaled, conical blooms give them their arachnid moniker. The 8-inch flowers of ‘Skinwalker’ bloom from May until June. You may be surprised to find that these daylilies bloom in the afternoon and last through the night. Most daylilies bloom during the day.

‘Orange Velvet’

  • ‘Orange Velvet’ daylilies boast large flowers that bloom more than once throughout May and June. The flower has orange petals with a vibrant green center. The plant’s 30-inch-high foliage does not die back completely in winter.

‘Lavender Blue Baby’

  • Diploid daylilies are often noted for their pink cultivars, but the ‘Lavender Blue Baby’ distinguishes itself from the rest not only by its color but also by its sweet fragrance. Early-season bloomers, ‘Lavender Blue Babies’ herald the approaching summer months. Flowers bloom during the day, and foliage dies back completely during winter months.

‘Beautiful Edgings’

  • The large, 7-inch blooms of ‘Beautiful Edgings’ flower more than once over the course of their early spring blooming season. The flowers’ green centers merge into rosy petals edged with cream-colored pigments. ‘Beautiful Edgings’ daylilies live up to their name, and they are also fragrant. Reaching 30-inch heights, these plants do well in areas bordering patios and walkways. The foliage does not die back completely during the dormant season.
