Planting Instructions for Daylilies

17

Daylilies are perennial flowers that come in a variety of colors. They are considered sturdy plants because they need little water or care. They will continue to produce flowers for years after the initial planting process. Daylilies are often used as flower borders or are planted in large groups for an esthetically pleasing effect. The plants survive well in the winter, although they should be covered if a bad frost is expected.

Instructions

Things You’ll Need
  • Daylily rhizomes (bulbs)
  • pH balance soil test
  • Water
  • Bowl
  • Shovel, spade or trowel
  • Manure
    1. Choose the proper location for your daylilies. Although they can survive in a minimal amount of shade, planting the daylilies in full sun will help them thrive. Plant them away from other flowers, trees or plants.
    2. Test the pH balance of your soil. Daylilies grow best in soil with a pH balance of 6.5. If the soil’s pH balance is less than 6, add lime and wait a season before planting. If the pH balance is 7.5 or higher, add sulfur to the soil and wait a season before planting.
    3. If the bulbs are dry, add water to your bowl and soak the roots of the daylilies for an hour. Do not submerge the entire bulb.
    4. Till the area where you will plant your daylilies. Go at least one foot into the ground as daylilies grow long roots.
    5. Add manure to the soil and mix well. The manure will help the daylilies grow. If you do not have manure, homemade compost will do.
    6. Place the bulb into a hole that is about one to two inches below ground level with the roots pointing down. Make sure that the roots are left straight and do not bend or twist. Cover with soil and water. According to the Abundant Daylilies site, the flowers need only approximately one inch of water a week.

Tips & Warnings

  • Daylilies should be planted at least two feet apart.
