How to Care for a Gerber Daisy Plant

18 Gerber daisies, or Gerbera jamesonii, are colorful plants that require a bit of care and maintenance but will bloom for a very long time. Certain temperatures and light specifications are needed with these daisies. Once they have begun to bloom they will continue for about six weeks if they are properly maintained. They can thrive in cooler climates.

Difficulty:
Moderately Easy

Instructions

    1. Plant your daisies are in a well-lit area. They need lots of sunlight and will bloom for longer if they receive more sunlight. You can use artificial light as well if it is needed.
    2. Use soil that drains well. Soil that holds water or creates puddles is not good for these flowers. The soil should be kept moist while the flowers are in bloom. During the winter the soil can be a bit dryer.
    3. Keep the temperature Gerber daisies are exposed to between 55 and 70 F. If it is hotter they will wilt and if it gets below 45 F the leaves of Gerber daisies will begin to turn black.
    4. Add fertilizer to the soil every other week while the flowers are blooming. Water-soluble fertilizers are best.
    5. Remove all blooms and leaves as they die. This will encourage new growth and keep the plant looking fresh.

Tips & Warnings

  • Gerber daisies take anywhere from six weeks to six months to bloom so do not be alarmed if they have not begun to bloom even after a few months.
