How to Upkeep an Orchid Plant

1. Give the orchid sufficient lighting. Pay attention to leaf color to help determine whether the plant is receiving the proper amount of lighting; too much light causes leaf burn, while not enough light prevents blooms.
2. Provide fresh air or gentle airflow from an oscillating or ceiling fan.
3. Maintain a consistent daytime and nighttime temperature difference of between 15 and 20 degrees Fahrenheit.
4. Water the plant according to its individual needs. Check the growing medium frequently to best detect the proper time to water, which is as it dries out. Insert a wooden skewer into the potting mix, and if it comes out dry, then it is time to water. Water thoroughly until the potting medium is soaked, which happens when water runs freely through the drainage holes.
5. Fertilize the plants at regular intervals, weekly during the summer and biweekly during the fall and winter. Administer the fertilizer at half its recommended dose.
6. Repot only when necessary, such as when the plant outgrows its container.
