How to Split Orchids

split-orchids-800x800

As orchids grow, they produce multiple stems, or pseudobulbs, that act as flowering divisions for the plant. Eventually these divisions become either too large or too crowded in the pot for the orchid to grow well. This is a good opportunity to propagate that orchid by splitting, or dividing, it into separate plants. With some care, you can produce two or more new orchid plants from a single specimen. The process is not difficult and is often done without the use of any tools.

Instructions

things you’ll need:
  • Razor knife
  • Plant pot
  • Orchid medium
    1. Remove the orchid plant from its pot after blooming is complete and the plant is dormant. Loosen the roots and growth medium from around the plant, and carefully separate the plant along the flowering divisions, looking for the natural split between the divisions.
    2. Separate the flowering divisions by hand — or cut through the rhizome between the flowering divisions in the plant with the razor knife, if necessary. Separate the plants completely.
    3. Clean away old growing medium, and trim away the dead roots on the plant. Comb out the roots, loosely, with a pencil to provide space between the roots for a new growing medium. Trim back growing roots to around 4 inches.
    4. Fill a 6-inch plant pot halfway with orchid growing medium. Place the roots and bulb of the orchid into the pot along one side. Spread the roots out, gently.
    5. Fill in around the roots with more growing medium up to, but not over, the bulb of the flowering division. Press the medium down firmly. Water the plant so the medium is moist, but not wet.
