A florist’s dream come true, the cymbidium orchid provides flowers suitable for corsages, sprays for arrangements, and if left on the plant, flower spikes that last for ten weeks or more. The cymbidium is easy to grow, but requires a temperature trigger to rebloom.

Types of Cymbidium Orchids

  • There are two basic types of cymbidium orchids: standard and miniature. The standards are big, requiring a gallon-size container and growing to 36 to 40 inches in height. The miniatures are smaller than the standards, but are not tiny plants. The miniature cymbidiums grow to be just 24 inches tall and can be grown in a 6-inch pot. Both types need a lot of light by orchid standards and would enjoy a bay window, sunroom or greenhouse.

Pot Size and Potting Mix

Cymbidiums are classified as semi-terrestrial orchids. This means that they are not epiphytes and they do not like heavy dirt. They love a loamy, humus-rich mix that provides them with both air flow and moisture. A large pot that will act as ballast for the top-heavy established plant is appropriate. The plant is established when the top of the pot is filled with pseudobulbs and leaves.

Trigger for Rebloom

  • Standard cymbidium flower

Standard cymbidiums require four to six weeks in the low 40s to trigger a bloom cycle. This is their alarm clock. Leaving them outside in a protected area until right before the first frost would initiate a spectacular show of blossoms. Mini cymbidiums will rebloom in warmer temperatures and don’t require this manipulation. Spring and summer is when both types are building the energy to rebloom in the fall. Feed the plants every other watering during this time.
