How to Propagate Crocosmia

Crocosmia is a perennial flowering plant of the iris family. Crocosmia plants grow 2 to 4 feet tall, producing many red, dark red, orange or orange-yellow blooms situated on a spike above sword-shaped green leaves. Crocosmia flowers throughout the summer into fall. It grows best in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 6 to 10.

Instructions

  • Fork or shovel
  • Fungicide
  • Scissors, pruning shears or sharp knife
  • Vermiculite
  • Paper bag
    1. Carefully dig up a crocosmia plant in fall, after the flowers have died and the foliage has yellowed.
    2. Brush the soil away from the corm to reveal the withered old corm, new corm and small cormels attached to the new corm.
    3. Remove the cormels and set them aside.
    4. Trim away the foliage, withered old corm and all roots from the new corm.
    5. Wash the corm and cormels, air-dry and dust with fungicide. Store in a paper bag filled with vermiculite placed in a cool, dark place.
    6. Plant the corm and cormels in the spring after the last frost. Dig the bed to loosen the soil. Place the corms and cormels 3 inches apart and 2 inches deep. Water after planting.

Tips & Warnings

  • Cormels will require two to three seasons to flower.
