California Poppies Growing Guide

Poppies hail from a range of different countries, including China, India, Asia, and both south and central Europe. Today they are possibly best known as the California state flower, and one of that state’s most popular and successful wildflowers.

Location

  • Poppies do best in cooler climates, and enjoy full sun to partial shade. They require good, complete drainage and do well in crowded situations. They are a garden favorite in flower beds and planters.

Soil

  • Poppies require deep moisture in their soil, but also require good drainage. They do best in quick-draining soil mixed with compost.

Planting

  • Poppies are either annuals or perennials, but are always planted the same way. Sow poppy seeds in spring, directly into the garden or in indoor pots or planters. Poppies do best with spacing of 8 to 18 inches, and prefer slightly dry conditions, so shouldn’t be watered more than once a week.

Blooming

  • Poppies grow quickly and will bloom in mid-summer, with a range of 65 to 90 days after planting. The plants themselves will grow to 12 to 24 inches.
