Are California Poppies Endangered?

1

California poppies are native to North America’s Pacific slope from Baja, California, all the way north to western Oregon. As the state flower of California, poppy plants can be grown in most of the continental United States. The plants are not an endangered species.

Description

  • The plant features feathery greenery, showy orange-to-yellow flowers that reach from 1 to 3 inches in width. The flowers only open on sunny days. The flowers feature a deep-orange spot at the base of each petal. The plants bloom from February through October.

Planting

  • Plant poppy seeds in areas that receive full sunshine. The annual plants grow well in almost any soil type as long it drains well. In warmer climates, the plants resprout each fall and can do this for several years in a row. In cooler climates, the fallen seeds will germinate in the spring, similar to other annual plants.

Uses

  • California poppy often appears in wildflower seed mixes since they’re so easy to grow. Sow some of the seeds in dry areas since the plants are highly drought-tolerant. Enjoy their beauty in the garden; as soon as you pick some for a bouquet, you’ll find the petals fall off within hours.
