How to Prune Bleeding Hearts

1

Bleeding hearts, also called Dicentra spectabilis, are perennial plants with fern-like foliage and pink, red or white flowers. They grow in shaded areas to a height of about 2 to 3 feet. When planted in the correct conditions, little care is needed for the plant. Pruning, however, will encourage the plants to bloom more vigorously. Knowledge of how to go about pruning the plants will help you grow a healthy and attractive plant.

Instructions

things you’ll need:
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Scissors
    1. Clean your pruning tools before using to prevent the spread of plant diseases. Wash the blades with rubbing alcohol to disinfect them.
    2. Cut off any foliage that is yellowing or dead during the entire growing season. Separating out dead foliage will redirect more water and nutrients to healthy parts of the tree.
    3. "Deadhead" the blooms as they fade in the summer. Do not simply pinch off the blooms, snip off the whole stem with the faded flowers right down to the base.
    4. Cut back the yellowing foliage of the bleeding heart after the first frost. This will clear the way for new growth that will come in the spring.
