How Deep Do You Plant Bleeding Hearts?

No shade garden is complete without a bleeding heart plant, which should be planted in early spring or fall. It should be planted at least 1 foot deep into soil that is free of rocks and other debris.

Plant Location

  • Bleeding hearts prefer light shade and do well in the sun only in cooler climates. They don’t do well in soggy soils or open, windy areas or in soil that has a high clay content.

How to Plant

  • Space bleeding hearts 2 feet apart. Position the roots so that the crown, or top where the stem will emerge, is level with the soil. Fill the open areas around the roots loosely with soil, pressing down lightly to get rid of air pockets.

Plant Care

  • The National Gardening Association recommends applying compost at the base of the plants each spring as well as a 2-inch layer of mulch to retain moisture. "Water plants during the summer if rainfall is less than 1 inch per week," states the Association. Stems should be cut back after the first hard frost to about 1 inch above the soil line.
