Parts of the Bleeding Heart Plant – Viet Nam Agriculture

The bleeding heart plant is a small- to medium-sized shrub that produces heart and tear-shaped flowers. The old-fashioned bleeding heart produces the most noticeably heart-shaped flower. Foliage and color variations along with blooming times vary greatly between species. Some types lose their leaves and flowers in the fall while others maintain their blooms throughout the year. Bleeding hearts are shade-loving plants that thrive in rainy regions like the Pacific Northwest.

The foliage varies greatly among different bleeding heart species. Some types have deep green oval shaped foliage that doesn’t change much throughout the year. While other types such as the Gold Heart has foliage that becomes more yellow and green in the fall. The King of Hearts and Fringed has bluish-green foliage. Langtrees bleeding heart plants have fern-like foliage.

All types of bleeding heart display stunning blooms with varying colors that range between a combination of pink and white, deep red, pure white and cream. old-fashioned bleeding hearts bloom both white and pink and solid white flowers. The flowers are generally very soft and delicate. All the flowers have stems that connect to the branches. All the flowers contain the parts that standard flowers have, but many parts are tucked inside the flower itself. The stamen, anther and stigma are not visible because these are on the inside. The bleeding heart has everything other flowers have, but its essentially inside-out. This is what gives the flower it’s distinctive characteristics. The pistil, style and ovary are also inside the folds of the flower.

The branches of the bleeding heart plant also vary greatly depending on the variety. Some bleeding hearts have dark green woody long branches that arch over. Old-fashioned bleeding hearts have branches that are green or light brown. Other creeping types of bleeding hearts have more vine-like branches.
