How to Water Wax Begonias

wax

Although wax begonias are perennial plants, those planted outdoors are typically treated as annuals. Their perennial nature is accommodated in most parts of the United States only when they are treated as houseplants—or when potted outdoor plants are brought inside for overwintering. The foliage has a waxy coating that gives the deep green leaves a dull shine. The plants are available in nearly every flower color but true blue. Like all begonias, they grow best in shade or indirect sunlight. The ability to grow and flower in low light makes them prized as a houseplant. Careful water management is required to avoid root rot and drought stress.

Instructions

things you’ll need:
  • Soluble fertilizer
    1. Set the wax begonia pot in a drainage saucer. Avoid pots with attached saucers, as they are difficult to empty completely after irrigation.
    2. Water the wax begonia when the top half-inch of soil dries. Do not allow the soil to dry completely, as overly dry soil weakens the plants and damages the roots.
    3. Irrigate the plant by pouring water onto the soil at the base of the begonia plant. Pour water until it begins draining from the bottom of the pot, indicating the soil is evenly moist.
    4. Empty the drainage saucer immediately after watering. Standing water in the saucer soaks back into the soil, causing it to become soggy, which may lead to root rot.
    5. Combine a soluble balanced fertilizer with water at half the package-recommended rate before every other watering. Water the begonia with the solution only when the plant is actively growing and flowering in spring and summer.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wax begonias tolerate slightly drier soil in winter, but because the plants do not go dormant they should not be allowed to dry out completely.
